The founding of Liverpool FC

The roots of Liverpool FC began in 1880 when the Everton Football Club was formed. Originally based at Anfield, the team enjoyed some success, leading to the construction of the first-ever grandstand in Britain. However, in 1891, John Houlding took over the lease of the ground, raising the rent and prompting the departure of Everton to Goodison Park.
Houlding quickly sought to make use of the vacant ground and Anfield Road, so on March 15th, 1892, Liverpool FC was born. The first president was William McKeag and the first chairman was John Smith. Early years
Liverpool Football Club was formed in 1892 after a disagreement between the owners of Everton and John Houlding, the owner of Anfield. After being refused rent increases, Houlding formed Liverpool Football Club, and their first match was played on 3rd September 1892 against Rotherham Town.
The following year, Liverpool joined the Football League Second Division and gained promotion to the First Division in the 1893-94 season, finishing 8th in the league. The club had its most successful period during the early 1900s, winning two League Championships and an FA Cup between 1901 and 1906.
